Introduction of Bardia National Park
The first thing to know about a Bardia National Park Tiger Tracking Tour is that you won’t spend the whole day searching for a tiger with binoculars in your hand. Most of the experience is about reading the forest. Guides look for fresh tracks, listen to alarm calls, and work out where wildlife has moved. Some days everything comes together. Other days you return with stories, footprints, and a much better idea of how tiger tracking actually works.
The length of your stay shapes what you can do during the tour. A 2-night itinerary covers the main activities, but the schedule is fairly tight. With 3, 4, or 5 nights, there’s more time to revisit active areas, explore more of the park, and spend longer tracking wildlife. Visitors interested in wildlife photography in Bardia National Park often prefer the longer itineraries for that reason.
What Is Tiger Tracking in Bardia National Park?
This article compares every itinerary from 2 nights to 5 nights, along with the activities included. By the end, you’ll have a clear idea of what each tour includes and which option makes the most sense for the kind of trip you’re planning.
The name “tiger tracking” makes it sound like you’ll be chasing a tiger through the jungle. Well, that’s not how it works. The guides first need fresh signs that tell them a tiger has passed through the area. Fresh pugmarks, scratch marks on trees, scent markings, and alarm calls from deer or langurs are usually the first things they check before deciding where to go.
Once the guides pick up a trail, they’ll keep checking whether the signs are getting fresher or fading away. Sometimes it leads to a Royal Bengal Tiger, and sometimes it doesn’t. That’s simply how tracking works. Along the way, it’s common to come across rhinos, elephants, spotted deer, crocodiles, and plenty of birds. Even without a tiger sighting, watching experienced naturalists read the forest is a big part of the experience.
What’s Included in a Bardia National Park Tiger Tracking Tour?
Most itineraries combine several activities, so even if one tracking session doesn’t go as planned, you’ll still spend your time exploring different parts of Bardia National Park. The exact schedule depends on whether you’ve booked a 2, 3, 4, or 5-night tour, but these are the activities you’ll usually find included.
Tiger Tracking
This is the main reason most people visit Bardia. You’ll head into the park with an experienced naturalist who looks for fresh tiger signs such as pugmarks, scratch marks, scent markings, and alarm calls from wildlife. Some tracking sessions involve long walks, while others include short drives between different areas before continuing on foot.
Jeep Safari
Not every part of the park can be reached on foot. Jeep safaris help cover larger sections of the forest, especially areas farther from the park entrance. Along the way, it’s common to come across rhinos, deer, crocodiles, elephants, and plenty of birdlife, even if tigers stay out of sight.
Walking Safari and Nature Walk
Walking through the forest gives you a completely different view of the park than sitting in a vehicle. Your guide points out animal tracks, plants, trees, and small details that are easy to miss during a drive. The pace is slow, with plenty of stops whenever fresh wildlife signs are found.
Birdwatching
People spot huge numbers of birds like Kingfishers, hornbills, eagles, woodpeckers, and many other species are regularly seen during safaris and walks, especially in the early morning.
Wildlife Photography
Photography isn’t limited to tiger sightings. Most tours give you plenty of chances to photograph rhinos, deer, crocodiles, birds, forest landscapes, and everyday moments inside the park. If photography is your main reason for visiting, longer itineraries give you more flexibility to return to places where wildlife was active.
Tharu Village Visit and Cultural Program
Many tours also include time outside the national park. Visiting a Tharu village gives you a chance to learn about the community that has lived alongside these forests for generations. In the evening, some lodges arrange a Tharu cultural dance performance, although this depends on the tour package and your arrival schedule.
Bardia National Park Tiger Tracking Tour Itinerary
The itinerary depends on how many nights you spend in Bardia National Park. While every operator plans their tour a little differently, most follow a similar pattern. The longer itineraries don’t introduce completely new activities. Instead, they give you more time to revisit active wildlife areas, explore different parts of the park, and adjust the plan based on fresh tiger signs.
2 Nights / 3 Days
Day 1: Arrival in Bardia
After arriving in Thakurdwara, you’ll check into your lodge and meet your naturalist for a short briefing about the days ahead. If you get there early enough, there’s usually time to visit a nearby Tharu village or spend some time around the lodge before dinner. Some itineraries also include an evening Tharu cultural programme, depending on your arrival time.
Day 2: Tiger Tracking and Safari
You’ll usually enter the park soon after sunrise, when your guide begins checking for fresh pugmarks, scratch marks, and alarm calls before deciding where to track. The day often combines tiger tracking with a jeep safari or a guided nature walk, depending on where wildlife has been active. Even if a tiger stays out of sight, it’s common to come across rhinos, deer, crocodiles, elephants, and many bird species along the way.
Day 3: Departure
After breakfast, you’ll check out of your lodge and prepare for the journey back. If your departure is later in the day, you may have a little time to relax around the lodge before leaving. Most visitors leave Bardia in the morning and continue to their next destination.
3 Nights / 4 Days
Day 1 & Day 2: Arrival and Tiger Tracking
The first two days follow the same itinerary as the 2 Nights / 3 Days tour. You’ll arrive in Thakurdwara, settle into your lodge, and spend your first full day tracking wildlife with your naturalist. From here, the extra day gives you more flexibility inside the park.
Day 3: Another Day in the Park
Instead of wrapping up the tour, you’ll head back into the park for another full day of wildlife activities. Your guide may return to an area where fresh tiger signs were found the previous day or take you to a completely different section of the forest. Having another morning inside the park makes it easier to adjust the day’s plan according to the latest wildlife movement.
Day 4: Departure
After checking out of your lodge, you’ll begin your journey back from Bardia. Depending on your travel arrangements, you’ll either drive to Nepalgunj for your flight or continue by road to your next destination.
4 Nights / 5 Days
Day 1 & Day 2: Arrival and Tiger Tracking
The beginning of the tour is much the same as the shorter itinerary. You’ll settle into your lodge, meet your naturalist, and spend your first full day tracking wildlife inside Bardia National Park. The difference starts from Day 3, when you have more time to explore beyond the standard itinerary.
Day 3: Full Day Jeep Safari
A full-day jeep safari takes you into parts of the park that are difficult to reach on foot. You’ll pass through sal forests, open grasslands, and riverbanks while your guide continues watching for fresh wildlife activity. If new tiger signs are found, the route may change instead of following the original plan.
Day 4: Second Jeep Safari and Tharu Cultural Programme
Having another full day inside the park means you don’t have to rely on a single safari for wildlife sightings. Your guide can revisit places where fresh pugmarks or alarm calls were found earlier in the trip or explore another section of the park. Many itineraries end the day with a Tharu cultural programme before your final night in Bardia.
Day 5: Departure
After breakfast, you’ll check out of your lodge and begin your return journey. Whether you’re travelling by flight, private vehicle, or tourist bus, your transfer will follow the option you chose when booking the tour.
5 Nights / 6 Days
Day 1 to Day 4: Same as the 4 Nights / 5 Days Itinerary
The first four days generally follow the same itinerary as the 4 Nights / 5 Days tour. By this point, you’ve explored different parts of the park and your guide has a better understanding of where wildlife has been most active. The additional day gives you even more flexibility before the tour comes to an end.
Day 5: Extra Day Inside the Park
One more day means there’s no pressure to fit everything into a limited schedule. Your guide may return to an area where wildlife was particularly active during the previous days or spend more time waiting at places that have shown promising signs of tiger movement. It’s also a good opportunity for wildlife photography, especially if you’ve been hoping for another chance to photograph animals in better light.
Day 6: Departure
Your final morning is usually spent having breakfast, checking out of the lodge, and beginning the journey back from Bardia. From there, you’ll continue to your next destination by flight, private vehicle, or tourist bus, depending on the travel option you’ve arranged.

Essential Information
How to Reach Bardia National Park?
Most visitors travel to Bardia National Park by flight, tourist bus, or private vehicle. The right option usually depends on how much time you have and how comfortable you want the journey to be.
By Flight
Flying is the quickest way to get there. Domestic flights operate from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, and from Nepalgunj it’s another two to three hours by road to Thakurdwara, where most lodges and safari operators are located.
Note: If you book your flight tickets through Sunshine Travel Agency, we’ll arrange your pickup from Nepalgunj Airport at no extra cost, so you won’t have to worry about finding transportation after your flight lands.
By Deluxe Tourist Bus
If you don’t mind spending longer on the road, you can take a deluxe or overnight tourist bus from Kathmandu. Some travel companies also arrange departures from Pokhara. It takes much longer than flying, but it is usually the cheaper option.
By Private Car or Jeep
A private car or jeep gives you the most flexibility because you can leave whenever you want and stop along the way if needed. This option is often chosen by families, groups, or travellers who are visiting other places in western Nepal before heading to Bardia National Park.
Best Time to Visit
Bardia National Park is open throughout the year, but the experience changes with the seasons. The most popular time to visit is from October to April, when the weather is cooler, trails are easier to walk, and wildlife is more active during the day. If your main goal is tiger tracking in Bardia National Park, March to May is also a good time because animals often gather around rivers and waterholes as temperatures rise. During the monsoon season (June to September), heavy rainfall and dense vegetation can make tracking more difficult, and some safari activities may be limited.
FAQs
How difficult is a tiger tracking tour?
You don’t need any previous trekking experience, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven forest trails. The pace is steady, with regular stops while guides look for fresh wildlife signs.
What’s the difference between a tiger tracking tour and a regular jungle safari?
A regular jungle safari mostly follows fixed routes by jeep, while a tiger tracking tour is guided by fresh wildlife signs found that day. Instead of simply driving through the park, you’ll spend more time walking with experienced naturalists and following clues such as pugmarks and alarm calls.
Can children join the tour?
Yes, although shorter itineraries are usually a better choice for families with young children. Parents should keep in mind that tiger tracking involves quiet walks through the forest and requires following the guide’s instructions at all times.
Bottom Line
A Bardia National Park tiger tracking tour can be as short as 2 nights or as long as 5 nights, so the itinerary mostly depends on the time you have available. Short trips cover the main activities, whereas longer ones provide additional tracking sessions, more wildlife photography opportunities, and extra time inside the park. Compare the itineraries, see what fits your schedule, and book the one that matches your plans.
